Flora & Fauna

The island has a great variety of flora, it has forests full of oak, papaya, mangoes, watermelons, on its mangrove coasts, on its beaches you can enjoy palm trees of various species, very delicious and nutritious almonds.

In terms of wildlife you can find iguanas, lizards, monkeys, butterflies sanctuary, yellow head parrots, macaws, rabbits, deer, snakes, marine species such as turtles, barracudas, snappers, marlin, mahi mahi, wahoo and animals in captivity.

SECLUDED BEACHES IN ROATAN

Camp Bay Beach is the longest natural beach on the island of Roatan, with approximately 2km of white sand, bathed by turquoise water and bordered by tropical palms makes it a magical place to leave all kinds of stress.

Camp Bay is not the only lonely beach on the island, but if the most extensive and with natural beauty, also has a reddish cliff, for true lovers of nature and photography. By staying in the north of the island, you will enjoy Caribbean winds ideal for wind sports.

Roatan East End Mangrove Tunnels

Mangroves serve a double purpose while protecting the reefs: Avoiding through their roots the flow of mud towards the reefs and Avoiding the excess of sweet waters to flow to the reefs centers which would eventually destroy them. Mangrove forests are extremely productive ecosystems and also protect island coasts in times of hurricanes.

You will find mangroves throughout the island, but mainly in the communities of Jones Ville, Calabash Bight, old and new Port Royal located at Santos Guardiola municipality, also called east end. The eastern most quarter of the island, specifically near the community of Helene, is separated by a channel through the mangroves that is 15 meters approx. wide on average from south to north of the island.

Hiking Experience in Roatan

For those visitors who wish to climb hills, it is quite exciting due to the fact of the nonexistence of poisonous snakes and dangerous wild animals. This favors greatly the possibility to walk around without taking any risks. It is noteworthy that most of the islanders travel by foot. The community of Port Royal is home of the only national wildlife refuge park on the island, an exciting place to go hiking, views that are priceless.

One of the most important factors of hiking in Roatan, is that when you reach the top of the hills, you can appreciate the natural beauty of the small towns along the coast, bordered by the reef system that surrounds the island. Roatan.
